Today we headed out for our first Barcelonian adventure. This consisted of touring Gaudi’s Basilica, and perusing the streets of La Rambla, AKA the pedestrian headquarters of Barcelona. When we arrived at La Familia Sagrada we were amazed at how incredible the architecture was, even from afar. We had purchased an audio-guide of the Basilica so we wouldn’t be subjected to many hours of a tour guide droning about “this angle…”, and “that window….”, etc. in hopes we could shorten the time. The tour consisted of 13 different locations at various spots in and around the church that coincided with an audio recording. The longest part of the ‘tour’, however, was before it even got started. As we all know, there are many type-A personalities in this family. We all want to take charge, and we all think we know the right answer and are so confident and demanding...even if we are wrong. We started it off right when we disagreed about where tour spot #1 was located. Barbs had her handy dandy church map, of which the distributor of audio-guide equipment had highlighted for us where we were, and where to start the tour. Being the savvy travelers that we (Hannah and Cedar) are, we instantly knew where to go, however Barbs had another place in mind. |
Finally we began and finished tour locations #1-12. We had a blast. Gaudi is a genius. At the end of the tour, Barbs wanted to take an elevator to the top of the church to catch the view of Barca so we agreed. There were 2 locations in the church for this activity, so we picked one. The line was very long so we decided to go across the church, a 5-minute journey, to get into the shorter line. That line was even longer. We trudged our way back across to the original location, where we waited in line once again. When we got finally got to the front, we realized that we had to have an already-purchased ticket to get onto the elevator. Are you kidding me? Feet aching, knees hurting (Chuck), feeling like the top of the church was a party that we were not cool enough to enter, and hearts broken, we left the church. We were so disgusted, poor #13 never even got a visit from us. Time it was supposed to take to do the tour: 1 hour 5 minutes Time it took us to do 12/13 of the tour: 2 hours. |
Until next time!
